Ad Humanitas took a group of twenty six people to Marrakech in
january 2007. We stayed in an old riad in the heart of the Medina,
and spent a week enjoying ourselves in the varied culture, sites,
sights and music, not withstanding the fantastic food and
hospitality of the Moroccans. We didn't forget to 'do' workshop -
as we brought everyone to become attentive of how the environment –
the foreign sounds, smells, sights and language – brought up
differing states internally. We took the opportunity to work with
people during the time, and utilized our card set to emphasize that
we can use the idea of the forces and levels of emergent being at a
pictorial or iconic level, and go the participants to use their
cards to set out or explain their state to a companion. THis was a
great exercise, emphasizing that we can sort our own states out by
ourselves, in most cases, rather than needing others to do it for
us. The week went quickly, but we packed in a huge amount of things
– we visited an old Qu'ranic school [600 years in existence],
listened to love songs about Mohammed, danced to Ganawa [southern
Moroccan music] and local Berber women singing, went visiting a
hillside town and its market, full of yesteryear charm, and the
notion that here we could find anything we wanted and more. We
spent time bargaining, buying carpets, finding trinkets and special
treasures in the labyrinthine suk in the medina and fed in a
variety of differing places with wonderful food, and enjoyed pretty
cold nights feasting in the colorful open air restaurants in the
main square, the Jama al fna [or place of
extinction].
